Zhou Chunya, male, born in 1955 in Chongqing, China, graduated from Sichuan Academy of Fine Arts in 1982, graduated from the Department of Free Art at the Kassel General University in Germany in 1988, and now lives and works in Chengdu and Shanghai. Zhou Chunya's painting style has been described as a mixture of Western modernism, traditional Chinese painting, and the socialist realism he learned in school. Zhou considers himself first and foremost a colorist, and his favorite color is a precise shade of green known as Classical Italian Vedic 290. "Color has no meaning in itself, it only has meaning when one thinks of it," he says. Zhou's early paintings feature stones and flowers borrowed from Chinese portraiture, but the creative style was influenced by German Expressionism.
