Item Details
Description
An impressive late 19th century Continental allegorical porcelain figural mantel timepiece with alarm
in the 18th century style, probably commemorating the reign of King Stanislaw August of Poland as Patron of the Arts
the pierced cartouche case, apparently unmarked, surmounted by a drumming putto with a sword standing on a cupola, the front with an eagle and a crowned profile portrait cresting, the base with a crowned armorial for Stanislaw August, the whole flanked by various classical figures, the unusual cusped Arabic and Roman enamel dial centred by a small Roman alarm dial, with elaborately pierced brass hands, the fusee and spring barrel movement with balance wheel and verge escapement, a silvered French regulation disk above the outside rack, the right side of the backplate stamped 8640, 54cms high
Condition
The case has some rubbing and loss of gilt, consistent with the timepiece's age and use. The woman with the flower basket's foot has been repaired, though this repair is not immediately apparent. There is some discolouration and cracking to the back of the case, and the bottom edge of the front though these cracks appear stable.
The dial shows some discolouration, with a possible repair between XI-XII. The alarm disk is deeply chipped above IIII, and there are several hairline cracks coming from this chip. There are also several chips above VII and between XI-XII. The alarm pointer appears to have been let into the hour hand boss. Based on the position of the alarm train hole, it is possible the clock did not begin life with an alarm feature, though this is not confirmed.
The movement is not currently ticking or alarming. It is not immediately obvious why, and would require further investigation. One of the dial feet is broken, meaning that the movement is not firm to the dial, though it is firm in the case.
