Description
19th C (May 1861) portrait of a girl holding a Civil War hat. Rear of art is denoted as a memorial to John Howard Gibson 1857 - 1894. This is an "ivorytype" that is created by coating a glass plate with collodion and then photographed, resulting in a glass plate negative and then placing it on sensitized natural material and creates a positive image when exposed to light and then tinted or painted. This piece measures approx 8.5" x 6.5" without the frame. (From the direct descendants of Baynard & Mary Gibson Henry. Both were prominent figures and contributors in Philadelphia. Mary Gibson Henry was a notable botanist and her plant collections were the first in creation of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University in Philadelphia.)
