Roman, Imperial period, ca. 1st to 2nd century CE. A petite yet charming gold ring with a piecrust bezel featuring a red glass intaglio of a man-faced bull striding left. Man-faced bulls were commonly depicted on coinage in Ancient Greece and Rome. They are intended to represent the river god Achelous, who was able to change shape. He is frequently pictured as a bull as the power of a raging bull was equated to the relentless power of a fast-flowing river. Size of ring exterior: 0.7" L x 0.6" W (1.8 cm x 1.5 cm); of intaglio: 0.4" L x 0.3" W (1 cm x 0.8 cm); US ring size: 1.5; gold quality: 78.63% (equivalent to over 18 karats); weight: 0.9 grams
