HURLEY (FRANK) 'Madigan. The Meteorologist' [with Ice Mask], vintage gelatin silver print, on the original thick card mount, original Fine Art Society Exhibition label, with pencil title and exhibition number '57' on verso, loss to extreme tip of one corner, 458 x 330mm., [Between 1911-1914] Footnotes: An iconic Hurley image demonstrating the extraordinary challenges of the weather faced by members of the Australasian Antarctic Expedition, 1911-14. Cecil Thomas Madigan (1889-1947), the Expedition meteorologist, is depicted in an 'ice mask' build up whilst he was returning to the base hut at Denison Station, Adelie Land during a blizzard. 'Madigan led the eastern sledging party which traversed the sea-ice and coastline of King George V Land, a round journey of 500 miles (805 km), which took two months. Overcoming many near-disasters, the party collected significant data on the ice, and discovered a coal-bearing rock formation' (L.W. Parkin, Australian Dictionary of Biography).
