Paul Joseph Leyendecker (French, 1842-1891) Oil on Canvas, 1872, "Scene from the Merchant of Venice", H 18.25" W 15" | Signed and dated in the lower right. Depicting Bassanio and Antonio from William Shakespeare's play the Merchant of Venice. Hardy-Alan supply canvas (Paris, 1860-1903). Having a substantial giltwood and gesso frame, H 29.75", W 26.25", D 3.75". Provenance: Property from the Estate of Drs. Richard and Catherine Paskowski, New City, NY
Condition
Original canvas, stretcher and period, if not original, frame. Overall varnish fluoresces under UV light with no evidence of patching or overpainting. Stable craquelure. Small surface scuff at the calf of the right hand subject's right leg.
