Antique E. & T. Fairbanks Winchester Brass Grain Scale
Vermont, late 19th century, brass sliding beam scale with 1877 pat date and stamp of WINCHESTER BUSHEL to slider (14 3/8 in. length), includes (5) brass swing handled pails in graduating sizes from quart size to smaller, most stamped "FAIRBANKS" or "LOGAN MACHINE WORKS" with capacity mark, and numbered mark to handle (6 x 5 3/4 in. dia. largest).
Winchester grain density scales were an antique market-day tool used by farmers and merchants to determine the moisture content and yield per acre of various grains. Prior to 1650, the market town of Winchester, England approved a system of standardized weights and measures as pints, quarts, pecks, bushels, etc. recognized in America.
