Louis XVI-style gilt and silvered bronze and marble mantel clock, late 19th century, with Neoclassical figural allegory of literature beside a column housing the face with Roman numerals and movement, raised on rouge griotte marble base. Movement and face marked Lemerle-Charpentier Paris, Rue Charlot 8. Clock probably dates around 1878 when the company exhibited a number of then new designs at L'Exposition Universelle in Paris. [25 1/2" H x 18" W x 8 1/2" D]. In distressed condition with heavy oxidation and losses to finish; losses to clock face and some mounts; chips and scuffs to marble.
