Description
Three folk art cut paper silhouettes of 3 family members, each with water color highlights, early 19th century. Includes 1/2 portrait of father, full portrait of mother holding book, and full portrait of boy with bird perched on hand. They are housed in black walnut frames from the mid 19th century or later (the frames probably not original) - paper backing on each marked "A. Ernest Gray / Expert Picture Framing / E. Main St., Tel.29-8-3160 / Stockbridge Mass.". Note that A. Ernest Gray was a neighbor of Norman Rockwell in Stockbridge and he was once featured in one of his paintings (from a Facebook excerpt from a relative of Mr. gray regarding a painting in the Norman Rockwell Museum). These silhouettes likely once belonged to Norman Rockwell. The total size of each approximately 6 3/4" x 8 5/8". Provenance: From the Thomas & Gail Rockwell collection, LaGrangeville NY. Tom is the son of the renowned American artist, Norman Rockwell and the author or many children's books. His late wife Gail, was an artist-illustrator and the daughter of Arthur E. Sudler and Janet Whitson Sudler, both early 20th century artists - she illustrated several of her husband's children's books.
