Hard boards, dark blue cloth board, blue lettering on front board [heavy cloth wear- especially the edges: see photos]; black leather spine, illustrated endpapers [the endpapers inside cover are damaged see photos], unpaginated [c.100 pages], printed on high quality heavy paper, "Ettrick School/ 5 Low Library" is ink written on verso of the front endpaper, "Margaret Newcomb book" is ink written on the back of the back ep, some soiling and wear, fair / good condition. Donald Culross Peattie (1898-1964) was an American botanist, naturalist and author. He was described by Joseph Wood Krutch as "perhaps the most widely read of all contemporary American nature writers" during his heyday. Peattie's nature writings are distinguished by a poetic and philosophical cast of mind and are scientifically scrupulous.

Naomi Averill (Mrs. J. Edward Elliot, 1905-1992) was American artist and illustrator, born in Thomaston, ME, studied art at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY and lived in Thomaston, ME. She illustrated several books in the 1930s-1940s.
