The copper surface was once gilt, remains of the gold are present in some areas, especially on the verso of the head and back, where the statue may have not been touched or exposed as much as the forward face. The robes are enameled in a turquoise cloisonne with scrolling vines and floral patterning. The underside of the pedestal is sealed with a plate stamped with a dorje held in place with small tabs, the hollow interior of the statue may have contained paper prayers or small offerings. The dorje, also known as a vajra, is associated with Esoteric Buddhist rituals, especially in Tantric Vajrayana practices.
