Description
Artist: Nobukazu Title: Emperor Jimmu Date: Circa 1930-1940 (Showa). Publisher: Shobunsha. Medium: Japanese Color Plate Print. Author: Kokushi Meiga Kankokai. Place of Origin: Tokyo Size: (7x14.1/2in) Special Notes: In tiny font, listing the historical events pictured of samurai battles and historical scenes right margin. Special Notes: Fantastic depiction of Emperor Jimmu, the legendary first emperor of Japan, standing atop a cliff. Supposedly born in southern Kyushu, he decided to move eastward to conquer the entire country. With the assistance of a Yata crow as a guide, he reached Yamato and was victorious in battle, accepting the throne of Japan. He is shown here holding his rustic bow with the crow perched on top, an enormous orange sun with rays of light radiating from the bird. He clutches a quiver of arrows in his other hand, looking over his shoulder with a stern frown. At left, the natives react with awe and shock, some of them tumbling over themselves in an attempt to escape. Jimmu wears a blue tunic over white pants and furry shoes, and a beaded necklace. His robes flutter in the wind and his long hair blows around his face. He is surrounded with retainers who wear tunics that lace up the frown and carry swords and spears. A great dramatic image of this mythical leader with a terrific, bold design.
