Item Details
Description
The Imitation of Christ.' Jacob Merlo Horstius [Editor]. 1675. Based on the inscriptions in this book, it appears that this book belonged to the Holyoke family of Massachusetts. Some inscriptions appear to be those of Rev. Elizur Holyoke (1731–1806), Harvard, 1750, and ordained at Boxford, Mass., 1759. Elizur was a descendant of Massachusetts Bay settler Capt. Elizur Holyoke (1618–1676). "During King Philip's War, Capt. Elizur Holyoke was in command of the successful defense of Springfield (Massachusetts) until his death in 1676; one account says not due directly to any injury. However, there are other accounts that say he was killed by the Wampanoag Indians on 5 Feb 1676. Capt. Holyoke was the uncle of Thomas Putnam and the great uncle of Ann Putnam, Jr., of the Salem witch trials." Wikipedia. This book bears two "Elizur Holyoke" signatures on the endpapers, front and back, as well as other period inscriptions and a full text of what appears to be devotional writing on the endpaper. More research will need to be done into the source of these writings in this uncommon and historically important volume.
Condition
Every lot is sold "as is," "where is," and "without warranty," whether express or implied. Lighting and electronics have not been tested and should be professionally evaluated prior to use. Art has not been examined outside of the frame unless otherwise stated.

Our auction items are antique and vintage, often from estates, and are not in perfect condition. They often show normal signs of age, use, and wear, which might not be specified in a condition report. Bidders are responsible for determining the physical condition of items prior to bidding. The absence of a condition report does not indicate the absence of condition issues with the lot. Requests for condition reports, additional photographs, or a video inspection can be obtained via email at: info@Vallots.com (any condition statement given is offered as an opinion and should not be treated as a statement of fact).

All bids are final. We do not offer refunds based on item description, condition, or any other reason.
