DESCRIPTION: "The Book of the American Indian" by Hamlin Garland and pictured by Frederic Remington. Published by Harper & Brothers Publishers, New York and London: 1923. Black and brown boards with pictorial paste-down, brown laid dustjacket also with pictorial paste-down, 274 pages. Signed on second page "Frederic Ray, Christmas 1929," and initialed "F.E.R.," on the first page. PROVENANCE: Owned by Harrisburg, Pennsylvania artist Frederic E. Ray Jr. (1920-2001). Ray was a comic book artist and commercial illustrator best known as the primary Superman cover artist of the 1940's - his cover of Superman #14 (February 1942) is one of comics' most famous. He also spent more than two decades as the artist of the DC Comics feature "Tomahawk". MEASUREMENTS: 12-1/2" x 9-1/8" x 1-1/2". CONDITION: Dust jacket with tears and loss. Ten illustration pages detached from binding. Scattered tears and small losses to some pages.
