BIOGRAPHY:
Trained in Paris, Maximilien Colin was a perceptive painter of domestic scenes whose work manifests the influence of Alfred Stevens and James Tissot, both painters of upper-class women in beautiful surroundings and attire. Younger than these artists, Colin preferred more down-to-earth subjects. Here, though the woman is wealthy and her surroundings well-appointed, the artist subtly evokes her dissatisfaction. The jumble of books and newspapers, the sheet music on the floor, and the buckled carpet all point to a household in disarray, which seems to evoke the matron's inner turmoil. Unfulfilled in the role of wife and mother, she reads to escape her boredom and, distracted even from that, stares pensively into space.
