Item Details
Description
Excavated silver VI Corps and soldier's ID badge. Finely engraved: "Bat. H. / Sergt. Carl. Bugbee / 11th V.t." With original soldered ring to reverse.

A fine silver corps badge inscribed to Sergeant Carlos Bugbee, Battery H, 11th Vermont Infantry, later the 1st Vermont Heavy Artillery. Bugbee enlisted on 1 September 1862 and saw promotion twice to corporal and sergeant. He was captured at Weldon Railroad on 23 June 1864 and imprisoned at the notorious Andersonville prison. He was later transferred to another prison in Goldsboro, North Carolina, where he died as a POW.

The 11th VT Infantry, later designated the 1st VT Heavy Artillery, was part of the famed VI Corps of the Army of the Potomac and saw very heavy fighting throughout the spring and summer campaigns of 1864.

A rare excavated example that includes both an artillery battery designation and infantry regimental number.
