Description: ANTON KOTHGASSER (1769-1851): A BOHEMIAN ENAMELLED GLASS BEAKER CIRCA 1820-30Austrian, the topographical ranftbecher finely painted with a view of St. Stephen's Cathedral (Stephansdom) in Vienna, of slightly tapering shape on a circular foot, of colourless glass, partly stained amber, gilded with gold and transparent painting; the gilded and amber stained rim decorated with a foliate border, the underside star cut and stained in amber, the reverse inscribed 'Der St Stephansdom in Wein', unsigned,12cm highA near identical beaker is in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, inv. no. C.155-1939. Kothgasser began his career as a painter at the Vienna Porcelain Factory before establishing his own successful workshop in 1813. He employed a small team of painters who specialised in painting in translucent enamels that could be fired at relatively low temperature, and produced exquisite glass beakers depicting famous scenes of Vienna for the Grand Tour market.
