Description
Eugenia Frances Baker McComas Californian 1875-1938 Polynesian Trilogy oil on canvas signed lower right on third piece "Gene McComas": 1.5 inch gold rounded edge frame For decades the triptych filled the McComas Room, a separate room of the dining of the Lodge. It was later moved to the Beach Club. In the late 1990's and early 2000's it was on loan for display at the Monterey Conference Center. A recent book by Scott Powell entitled ?Francis Elkins: Visionary American Designer,? notes the triptych attracted the attention of expatriate writer and native Californian Gertrude Stein. During a 1935 visit to The Lodge, she commented, ?This is the finest art I have seen since coming to America.? Piece 1 & 3 106 1/2 x 80 in. (270.5 x 203.2 cm.), Piece 2 106 1/2 x 96 in. Condition
One panel with an approximately 29-inch-long repair to the lower right corner, along the right edge. The same panel with an approximately 6-inch-long scratch to the lower right corner. Another panel with a group of three scratches to the lower left corner, each no longer than three inches. Two with areas of inpainting that fluoresce under uv light. Most are minor touchups but one area about 2 x 2 inches. Each with some very faint stretcher impressions. Occasional minor marks and accretions scattered throughout. Craquelure throughout with one panel having heavier craquelure to the lower right corner. Possibly more repairs.
