Sean Sutton (b. 1967)Paulsboro, NJ, c. 201515.5" Black duck decoy out of Sean's 2015 Black Duck gunning rig complete with custom molded Sean Sutton weights. Purchased directly from Sean by the consignor. From a rig of classic 'Philadelphia' style decoys imparted with personal iterpretation by the carver. Staying true to that style, they are hollow carved and have sleek and racy profiles with minimal carving details. Each of the decoys follow a similar body pattern with carved out speculums bordered with parallel lines running to the tip of the tails to delinate wings. They feature spectacular blended oil paint, as expected on all Sutton decoys, achieveing the detailed and vague color variations in black duck feathering. Bold iridecense in the speculums is achieved through a masterful blend of blues and blacks. All decoys display scratch painting on the head, even under the chin, coming to a detailed bill, further achieving the lifelike appearance on the decoy. Sean experimented with very fine, almost unnoticeable comb scratching in the body paint within the feathers.
