A 13-Bore Flintlock Brass-Mounted Coaching Carbine By Stanton, London, Circa 1760 With swamped barrel (some wear and light pitting) slightly flared at the muzzle and signed in capitals within an elongated loop along the tapering top flat at the breech, border engraved tang decorated with foliage, border engraved rounded lock signed in capitals and with sprung swing-out safety-steel, figured full stock (some repairs, partly replaced on the right side at the muzzle) carved with a shell behind the barrel tang, border engraved mounts comprising shaped flat bevelled side-plate decorated with foliage, butt-plate with rocailles on the heel tang, trigger-guard with a flower-head in an oval on the bow and with early form of acorn finial, vacant cast and chased trophy of arms escutcheon, turned baluster ramrod-pipes, and later steel-tipped ramrod, London proof marks and Stanton's barrelsmith's mark 57 cm. barrel Footnotes: Provenance The Penrose Collection Jonathan Stanton was apprenticed to William Turvey in 1739.
