An English Silver-Hilted Hunting Sword Circa 1740 With bright fullered saw-back blade double-edged towards the point, cast and chased hilt comprising downbent shell-guard decorated with a stag hunting scene in a landscape within a border of foliage inhabited by a winged demi-figure on each side, quillon-block with a hunting scene on both sides, recurved quillons chased with foliage and each with eagle-head terminal, domed pommel-cap with baskets of flowers between portrait busts, and rounded mottled cowhorn grips between silver straps punched with a repeated design, in its wood-lined red leather-covered scabbard (faded, some old scuffing) with silver locket (chape missing) punched with retailer's details 'Banister Cha: Cross', and with suspension hook cast with a figure against a punched ground and struck with London hallmark and maker's mark, possibly of Gabriel Wirgman 55 cm. blade Footnotes: For information regarding Gabriel Wirgman, sometime partner to James Morisset, see Leslie Southwick, London Silver-hilted Swords..., 2001, p. 259 This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: * * VAT on imported items at a preferential rate of 5% on Hammer Price and the prevailing rate on Buyer's Premium.
