A fine association envelope addressed by John Quincy Adams and adding his franking signature at top right. It measures 5.25" x 3.75" and is penned to "H. D. Gilpin, Esq. Philadelphia." Red postal cancel is evident at top left, with the cover in overall very good condition.

Henry D. Gilpin (1801-1860) was an American lawyer and statesman, best remembered for his position as the 14th Attorney General of the United States under Martin van Buren. In this capacity, he presented the U.S. Government's side in the pivotal Amistad case.
