Description
Revolutionary War
[London, England], Late 18th century
Late 18th C. Rev. War Engraving, "View of The Attack on Bunker's Hill, with the Burning of Charles Town, June 17, 1775" from "Barnard's History"
Engraving
An engraving from "Barnard's New, Comprehensive and Complete History of England: From the Earliest Period of Authentic Information, to the Middle of the Year MDCCCLXXXIII." Originally the book was "Printed for the Author and Published by Alex. Hogg, at No. 16, Pater-Noster Row" ca. 1781-1783, but this engraving could come from a later 1790s edition. Expected wear including isolated edge darkening and a minor wrinkle in the upper left corner. Minor smudges and discolored areas in the margins. Isolated insect damage near the bottom edge. Else near fine. 15.25" x 9.25."
The engraving is entitled in full: "View of The Attack on Bunker's Hill, with the Burning of Charles Town, June 17, 1775." After artist George Henry Millar (fl. 1780-1790) and by engraver John Lodge (1735-1796). On laid paper. Printed "Drawn by Mr Millar" at lower left, and "Engraved by Lodge" at lower right, above the title/caption. With lovely decorative elements in the trompe l'oeil borders surrounding the image. The engraving depicts the British attacking colonial forces entrenched on Bunker and Breed's Hill near Charlestown across Boston Harbor on June 17, 1775.
A pivotal tactical victory for the British during the Siege of Boston, the Battle of Bunker Hill (as it has since been called) was nevertheless extremely costly. The British only seized control of the Charlestown Peninsula on their third and final assault, and only after the Patriots ran out of ammunition. The artist has captured the dramatic action of the battle by delineating smoke, fire, and even the trajectory of projectiles! British warships ominously circle Charlestown in the foreground. Retail prices for this particular print fetch higher prices because of the desirable subject matter.
This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
