Woodburytype photograph of Thomas Henry Huxley, taken by Alexander Bassano, ca. 1877, London, England. Bassano's name is stamped on lower left of mount, with larger backstamp on verso. Captioned in an unknown hand along bottom edge: "Prof. Huxley". Measuring 4.25" x 6.5", accompanied by a 5" x 7" photographic print of an aged Darwin in profile, moderately silvered. Cabinet photo features light age toning with scattered foxing and isolated soiling verso. Else, near fine.
Thomas Henry Huxley (1825-1895) was an English biologist and anthropologist who specialized in comparative anatomy. He has become known as "Darwin's Bulldog" for his advocacy of Charles Darwin's theory of evolution. Huxley's support started with his anonymous favorable review of "Origins", which helped to prime his later debate with biologist and critic Samuel Wilberforce. He would remain a close friend of Darwin's throughout the rest of his life, and acted as a pallbearer at his funeral in 1882.
Alexander Bassano (1829-1913) was an English photographer most known for his photographs of Queen Victoria.
