Description
Carved steer horn with a riveted iron hook for belt attachment. Carved initial "PDR" (the owners initials) and "IR" (which stands for the 1st Regiment). These initials would have been carved by the Revolutionary War soldier to identify ownership.
LENGTH (including iron hook): 8 1/2" (22 cm)
PROVENANCE: Central New York State collection... Found at an estate in Pennsylvania.
NOTES / REFERENCES: The 1st Pennsylvania Regiment, originally mustered as the 1st Pennsylvania Rifles and also known as the 1st Continental Line and 1st Continental Regiment, was raised under the command of Colonel William Thompson for service in the Continental Army. Active 1775 - 1783. Engagements: Siege of Boston; Battle of Trenton; Second Battle of Trenton; Battle of Princeton; Battle of Brandywine; Battle of Matsons Ford; Battle of Germantown; Battle of Monmouth; Battle of Springfield; Battle of Stony Point.
