Description
Milan, circa 1939. Comprising a central figure of a man spearing an octopus, flanked by two figures riding hippocampi, one holding the reins, the other tumbling and grabbing the mane, with two mermaids, one holding an eagle and one holding a swan, and four seated putti, each individually adorned with varied fish, nets, snails, eels, masks, crabs and other sea creatures. All pieces marked Minotto or M. Minotto, Italy 800. Height of the central figure 23" , height of the hippocampi 17" and 18". Height of mermaid 10 1/2". Length of putti 11". All set on a shaped oval mirror plateau, with stepped borders and semi-circular ends, set on flatted ball feet and signed Minotto and stamped four times 41MI Italy 800, for Ditta F.IIi ei Leone, Milan, 1934 - 44. The length of mirror plateau 71", width 54", height 4". Accompanied by a custom made oval low table with a faceted oval base and beige marble top. Height of table 10", width 75", depth 57". Provenance: Presented by the Italian Government to Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, (1919 - 1980) last Shah of Iran, upon his marriage in 1939 to Princess Fawzia of Egypt (1921 - 2013). With Buccellati, New York, 1980's Venetian-born Marcello Minotto (1906 - 1998), trained at the Venice Art Academy, and participated in numerous exbitions including the Venice Biennale in 1942. In 1937 he moved to Milan, where he worked as a goldsmith and sculptor for various important firms including Buccellati. The total approximate weight of the silver pieces is 951.10 oz t.
