Natalia Sergeevna Goncharova (1881-1962) Costume for a Spanish Lady; a design for Le Coq D'or signed with initials by her partner, Mikhail Larionov (1881-1964) pochoir with coloured crayon 23.5 x 17.5cm Provenance: Gifted to Catherine Devillier (1891-1959) Collection of John Carr Doughty Sale; Christie's Impressionist and Modern Art Sale, 5 April 2006, lot 141 Catherine Devillier is considered the first black soloist in ballet history. Devillier escaped Russia whilst the Red Army were in power and lived in Paris between 1920-21. It is around this time that she is believed to have been gifted the pochoir by Goncharova who actively worked with Ballet Russes in Paris. Devillier eventually relocated to London where she remained there for the next three decades.
