A Gold-Lacquered Wood Panel in the Form of an Ogi (Folding Fan) after a Design by Sakai Hoitsu (1761-1829)
Meiji (1868-1912) or Taisho (1912-1926) era, early 20th century
The polished wood ground decorated in contrasting shades of gold takamaki-e and silver hiramaki-e with two butterflies in flight and a kamakiri (praying mantis) crawling over a leafy trailing fruiting vine, inscribed in gold hiramaki-e Hoitsu ga with a red seal and Yoyusai with a kao; with a plain black-lacquered tomobako storage box. 19.5cm x 51.5cm (7 5/8in x 20¼in). A few minor old small chips mainly along the wood's top edge, left edge and other comparatively even smaller chips along the upper right edge. Some minor areas of the gold lacquer a little rubbed here and there. The reverse of the panel with scattered typical old tiny dent marks and surface scratches. Otherwise very good presentable order.
