Edo period (1615-1868), 18th-19th century
The grey clay body of the waisted gourd shaped jar covered with a white slip, applied with the uchi-hakeme method, creating blotted brush marks or patterns, with a black-lacquered handled lid and a wood storage box attached with an inscribed paper slip Takeo Karatsu uchi hakeme mizusashi (Takeo Karatsu fresh water jar with scrubbing brush marks). 18.5cm (7¼in) high. No signs of restoration when examined under UV light. A few minor old chips along the foot rim on the underside, and a few minor old nicks around the mouth rim. Typical general surface wear and a few other minor firing imperfections including firing cracks the largest approx. 1cm x 1cm just above the foot. With an unrelated lacquered wood cover. Rare and unusual piece.
