A Pair of Gilt-Bronze Manzai Dancers, Meiji era (1868-1912), late 19th/early 20th century
Each figure wearing a hat and elaborately decorated costumes, one standing barefoot, laughing and clutching a tsuzumi (hourglass hand-drum) in one hand and gesturing with his index finger in the other, his robes boldly carved with cranes in flight amid clouds interspersed among formalised foliate crests, the second figure posturing in tabi-clad feet, one arm raised and gripping the edge of his right voluminous sleeve in one hand and holding an open fan in the other, his robes decorated with coiled dragon roundels amid formalised foliate crests, a katana tucked into his waist band, each figure affixed to a typical Miyao-style wood stand lacquered in gold takamaki-e with stylised dragon heads amid karakusa ('Chinese grasses'); each signed in a gold rectangular reserve Miyao tsukuru. Figure with drum: 55cm x 34cm (21 5/8in x 13 3/8in); figure with fan: 57cm x 34cm (22½in x 13 3/8in), including stands. (2).
