Description
Matt Lamb
Irish/American (Illinois), 1932-2012
Heavily textured oil on canvas
Signed. Abstract image in shades of orange, teal, and white with black outlining.
Matt Lamb was born on the south side of Chicago, Illinois in 1932 as the son of a funeral home owner. It wasn't until his 50s after a life-changing misdiagnosis that he decided he was destined to be an artist. He threw himself headfirst into his new career as a self-taught painter. He developed many of his own techniques, splashing canvases with bright colors and using plaster and concrete to create various textures. He decided to use his art as a platform to spread a message of peace, tolerance, hope, communication, and love among mankind. In 1986 he opened his first painting studio in Chicago, and would later open several other studios in Florida, Wisconsin, Germany, and France. The first fifteen years of his art career were spent traveling, learning new techniques and approaches to painting, opening painting studios and showing his work at galleries and fairs. After the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, Lamb created an art therapy concept called Umbrellas for Peace. He went on to orchestrate the project in 29 cities across the globe, and over two million people have participated in it to date. Before his passing in 2012, he donated nearly 80 percent of his work to institutions ranging from the Rockford Art Museum in Illinois to the Vatican in Italy.
Sight: 12 x 10 in. (30.5 x 25.4 cm.), Frame: 12 3/4 x 10 3/4 in. (32.4 x 27.3 cm.)
