Lev Yuryevich Kramarenko was born on January 1 (January 13), 1888 in Uman.
In 1906-1908 he studied at the Faculty of Law of St. Petersburg University.
The love of art led Lev Kramarenko to the workshop of the professor of the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts Dmitry Nikolaevich Kardovsky.
In 1908, the future artist interrupted his studies at the university, moved to Paris and continued his studies in painting at private academies with Charles Guerin, Pierre Bonnard, Paul Serusier, Maurice Denis. After France, Kramarenko visited Italy, where he studied the monumental paintings of the masters of the early Renaissance, and then in Munich got acquainted with the large decorative panels of Hans Mare.
On April 2, 1913, an exhibition of the artist was opened in the halls of the Imperial "Society for the Encouragement of Arts" in St. Petersburg.
It was during these years that L.Yu. Kramarenko was formed as a muralist.
The artist travels a lot. Works in the museums of Constantinople and Athens, lectures in Rome.
In 1918 he returned to Ukraine and became the director of the Glinskaya ceramic school in the Poltava region.
Since 1920 - chairman of the artistic council and head of the painting and composition workshops of the Ceramic School-Workshop in Mezhyhirya near Kiev (since 1923 - Art Ceramic College).
In 1920 Kramarenko L.Yu. was elected professor of monumental painting at the All-Ukrainian Academy of Arts.
In 1922 the Academy was reorganized into the Kiev Institute of Plastic Arts. Soon Lev Yurievich became its rector.
After the organization of the Kyiv State Art Institute in 1924, together with Professor Mikhail Leontyevich Boychuk, he headed the department of monumental painting.
In 1927, the artist was one of the organizers of the "Association of Contemporary Artists of Ukraine" (in Ukrainian - "Association of Contemporary Milits of Ukraine"). He took an active part in its work and participated in art exhibitions of the association.
In 1930, Kramarenko, together with young artists I. Zhdanko and Y. Sadilenko, painted frescoes in the conference hall of the Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.
In 1931, the faculty of monumental painting was transferred from Kyiv to Kharkov Art Institute and Lev Yuryevich moved to Kharkov.
Since 1932 the artist has been living in Moscow.
In 1936, a branch of the Moscow Art Institute was opened in Moscow to improve the skills of artists. Kramarenko headed the monumental workshop.
Work in the field of monumental painting and many years of teaching practice never separated the artist from the systematic work on the easel painting. Almost daily, getting up at 5-6 o'clock in the morning, L.Yu. Kramarenko sat down at the easel or took a sketchbook and went to paint a landscape. In addition, every year in the summer months the artist went to the Caucasus, Ukraine, Central Asia, where he worked hard and hard from nature. It was at this time of direct communication with nature that the artist's pictorial method developed, a bright and original plastic language was born. Kramarenko's method was close to the principles of painting by such Soviet artists as P. Konchalovsky, A. Lentulov, A. Osmerkin, whose work is characterized by the desire to reveal the truth and beauty of reality with all the richness of a sonorous, rich palette.
In November 1941, the artist moved to Samarkand, where the Moscow, Kiev and Kharkov Art Institutes were evacuated and organized the pedagogical process of unification of educational institutions.
March 2, 1942 the artist died. The sketch for his tombstone was made by Vladimir Andreyevich Favorsky.
The works of Lev Yuryevich Kramarenko are presented in museum and private collections.
