Hungarian traveler Armin Vambery, also called Arminius Vambery (1832–1913), developed as an authority on Turkey. A talented polyglot, by sixteen he was studying English, the Scandinavian languages, Russian, Serbian, and other Slavic languages. He was also fluent in Latin, French, German, and Hungarian. His interest in Ottoman literature and culture grew, and by the time he was twenty, he knew enough Ottoman Turkish to travel to Istanbul and start working as a private tutor for European languages. The first successful expedition of its kind made by a European, he then traveled throughout the Ottoman lands while disguising himself as a Sunni dervish. Vambery's adventures, which are detailed in this book, helped him become a well-known writer and celebrity throughout the world. He also got a position at the Royal University of Pest. He knew Bram Stoker, the author of Dracula, who had Van Helsing refer to his "friend Arminius, of Buda-Pesth University."
