He was born into slavery at Hierapolis, Phrygia (modern-day Pamukkale, in western Turkey), and he spent his whole childhood in Rome prior to being banished, at which point he relocated to Nicopolis in northwest Greece. His student Arrian recorded and disseminated his teachings in his Discourses and Enchiridion. Philosophy is a way of life, not only a theoretical field, as Epictetus taught. Epictetus believed that we should accept everything that occurs in a calm and detached manner because nothing outside of our control can control it. On the other hand, people are accountable for their own deeds, which they may scrutinize and manage with strict self-control.
