A section of the telegraph cable between Ireland and Newfoundland completed on August 5, 1858, to worldwide excitement, parades, and massive celebration. Tiffany bought the excess cable and cut it up into souvenir samples, of which this is one. The section has a metal band with "Atlantic Telegraph Cable Guaranteed By Tiffany & Co., Broadway, New York". Held with copper wire (loose, needs re-wiring, one side not connected) to later wood plaque with bronze plate engraved: "The Transatlantic Cable 1858". Some scratches to wood.
