Although he travelled extensively in West and Central Africa as part of his work, collecting works in situ, the majority of his collection came from the "cabinets of curiosity" that abounded in European capitals during the 1920s. It also comes from prestigious galleries (Paris, Brussels, London, New York, etc.). Dogon tribal African statues can also be the object of worship by the whole community when, for example, they commemorate the founding of the village. These statues, sometimes embodying the nyama of the deceased, are placed on ancestral altars and take part in various rituals, including those of the sowing and harvesting seasons. However, little is known about their functions. Influenced stylistically by the Tellem, whom they replaced in the Bandiagara region from the 15th century onwards, the Dogon adopted the same vertical position in their statuary. Inheritors of the Tellem works abandoned in the region, they adopted some of them and resacralized them for use in their own rituals.Additional Information: Stand not included.
