  • Provenance: The collection comes from the tribal art collection of Guy Mercier, a consultant for the Solvay group, who undertook it at the beginning of the 20th century. Although he travelled extensively in West and Central Africa as part of his work, collecting works in situ, the majority of his collection came from the "cabinets of curiosity" that abounded in European capitals during the 1920s. It also comes from prestigious galleries (Paris, Brussels, London, New York, etc.). The Tetela and Yela groups are of Mongo origin and are neighbors. Tetela sculpture takes a variety of forms, borrowed from the clans they live alongside, including Songye-inspired polychrome works. Several ethnic groups divided into lineages live in close proximity in central Zaire: the Mbole, Yela, Lengola and Metoko, and have similar associations. This proximity has led to certain stylistic borrowings. Their artistic production is very similar to that of the Metoko and Lengola. Their divination masks were exhibited at the closing ceremonies of the initiation and circumcision of young members of the Nkunda divination society, during which their "nsembu" or "ibola" masks appeared in pairs, male/female. These associations, including the Yela and Mbole lilwa, also judged those guilty of theft, adultery and murder. The judge, a high dignitary named isoya, also presided over ritual festivals marking the end of initiations.
