Description
mid 19th century, 329 x 155 cm, South Caucasus, Azerbaijan
SCHÜRMANN, ULRICH, Bilderbuch für Teppichsammler. Munich 1960, pl. 40
The black-ground field features a blue lattice with diamonds and hexagons of differing sizes. It contains geometrically stylised palmettes, branches with blossoms and rosettes. The striking design of the main border consists of two-storey reciprocal trefoils in white and brown with red outlines.
Schurmann published this carpet in 1960, describing it as an 18th century "Kouba". In our opinion, the relatively coarsely woven piece with a flexible texture was woven in the mid 19th century in the Baku region. This is also indicated by the style of drawing.
Signs of age and wear, various repiled areas, corroded brown. Both ends somewhat reduced, the original selvedges have been partially replaced.
