Description
The United States Geological Survey was established in 1879, with its main responsibilities being the "classification of public lands, and examination of the geological structure, mineral resources, and products of the national domain". The existence of Survey was especially important after the Louisiana Purchase in 1803, which greatly increased public lands further West, making the study of these newly acquired regions a priority for American expansion and development. This map, created for an official report on Texas by Robert "Rock Boy" Hill, covers portions of Texas' paleontological, stratigraphic and topographic data. A specific goal of this survey was to locate natural underground water sources. This was Hill's second of two large surveys he participated in of the Texas region. His investigations served to improve vast areas of farm and ranch land and laid down the foundation for future petroleum exploration. Image size: 32 - 1/4" high x 31" wide. Condition: (Excellent) Dimensions: Frame: 37" x 1" x 36".
