A rare Turkman or Ottoman steel sword (kilij)
Anatolia, dated AH 907/ AD 1501-2
the single-edged steel blade of curved form with flattened spine, yelman and double-edged section towards point, two fullers, engraved to each side with inscription-filled lobed roundels surmounted by further inscriptions, vegetal cartouches at each end of fuller, the longer fuller with scrolling tendril to hilt end, palmette lobed cartouche to forte, steel crossguard with flaring flattened quillons, wood grips

The blade is similar in form to a Mamluk sword, dated to the 15th Century, in the Furusiyya Collection (see Bashir Mohamed, The Arts of the Muslim Knight, the Furusiyya Art Foundation Collection, 2007, p. 58, no. 22).

Inscriptions: to one side al-'izza lillah ta'ala 'aqibat mahmud bad, 'Glory to God, may He be Exalted. May the ending be praiseworthy'; to the other side, al-khass fi niyyat al-ghuzat sana(?) 9(0)7 'amal muhammad shaykhi bin hasan(?) bursavi [sic] (?), 'Reserved for the intention of the holy warriors, year(?) 9(0)7 (1501-2). The work of Muhammad Shaykhi bin Hasan(?) Bursavi [sic](?),' to the rosettes on either side, Sura 61 (al-Saff), part of vs. 13; below these are the combinations of mystical letters found at the beginning of Sura 19 (Maryam) and 42 (al-Shura).
