An Ottoman gold-damascened steel sword (kilij)
Black Sea Coast, probably Trabzon, 19th Century
the single-edged steel blade of curved form with flattened spine and yelman, decorated to both sides in gold overlay with inscription-filled cartouches towards the forte, the forte with palmettes, the gilt-copper hilt set with paste, some painted, the wood scabbard clad in gilt-copper and decorated en suite to one side, the verso decorated in repoussé with floral scrollwork, with two suspension loops
