A gold koftgari steel sword (tulwar) with watered-steel hilt
India, 19th Century
the single-edged watered steel blade of curved form, chiselled and decorated in gold overlay to one side with an inscription-filled cartouche, the forte to both sides with a lobed half palmette cartouche containing floral scrollwork, above floral motifs in square panels, the hilt of typical form of watered-steel decorated in gold overlay with a foliate border and chevrons to the inner handle and quillons, the ends of the quillons with floral sprays, the handle terminating in a lion head with movable tongue, the wood scabbard clad in red velvet
