Item Details
Description
Pre-Columbian, Maya Territories, Mexico, Xico, Late Classic Period, ca. 650 to 850 CE. A striking pottery fragment of a bowl with 2 rows of relief glyphs representing Chaac (also Chac or Chaahk), the Maya god of rain, thunder, and lightning, recognizable by his characteristic pendulous nose. Above these bands is an additional horizontal register of incised geometric motif. All is adorned in black and red pigments on buff and hand-burnished to a lustrous finish. Size: 3.6" L x 7.8" W x 4.7" H (9.1 cm x 19.8 cm x 11.9 cm)

A label on the interior notes that this fragment bears a striking resemblance to another fragment found in Xico Mexico published as figure 30 in "La Ceramica Arqueologica de Mesoamerica" by Eduardo Noguera (Mexico: Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico Instituto de Investigaciones Historicas Mexico, 1965).

Provenance: private southern California, USA collection, acquired before 2000
