Description
Early Karadashli Main Carpet
282 x 161 cm (9' 3" x 5' 3")
Turkmenistan, 18th century
Condition: very good according to age, mostly good pile, scattered small repairs
Provenance: purchased at Galerie Mangisch, Zurich 1991
Compare: Joseph V. McMullan, "Islamic Carpets", 1965, Fragment No. 126
Warp: wool, weft: wool, pile: wool
This elegant carpet with the deep rich colours associated with Karadashli carpets typifies the early examples from this tribe, perhaps emblematic of the rich and fertile territory that they occupied in southwestern Turkmenistan. The major and minor borders are well known on these carpets but the alems here are of great appeal with tall double height trees. The most interesting feature is the drawing of the Karadashli guls which appear to have none of the usual internal divisions but is simply quartered, and almost create the illusion that the ground continues under the göls with only a few tribal motifs resting on top. The secondary chemche gül variant is also elegantly drawn with wide horizontal arms and the way that it does not touch the sides of the carpet is an unusual feature.
