Description

A Queen Anne silver tankard Richard Bayley, London 1712 Of tapering cylindrical form, the whole plain polished, with a hinged stepped dome cover, a bifurcated scroll thumbpiece and hollow scroll handle topped by an engraved crest, the body with an applied girdle and an engraved coat-of-arms to the front, all raised on a skirting circular foot, height 22cm, diameter base 15cm, weight 42.5oz. Footnotes: There are two family crests on this tankard. The earlier family is linked to the crest on the handle. The original grant of arms has not been found, however there are records that relate to the arms being used at a later date by William Charles JONES (1853-1939) Esq. of Lannerick Park St Asaph, Wales. In 1882 he married Mary GREENALL (1861-1949) the daughter of Edward GREENALL Esq. of Grappenhall Hall, Chester. Their son William Piers Montagu JONES (1883-1951) would have inherited the same arms and crest, and it his descendants that today hold the same arms. The large coat-of-arms found on the front of the tankard with the motto 'DECIDE AND DARE', is a 19th century grant of arms to James Stirling DYCE (1853-1908), born in Norwood Surrey the son of William DYCE (1806-1864) Esq. of Aberdeen by Jane Bickerton BRAND (1830-1885) eldest daughter of James BRAND (1796-1860) of Milnathort co. Kinross. The BRAND family were noted non-conformists. Unfortunately James Stirling DYCE never married and as a result the grant of arms only lasted for his own life time.
