First edition, in the rare first state with only one copyright date present, octavo, signed by Welty in black ink on the title; bound in publisher's green cloth-backed patterned boards, spine lettered in silver; with the pictorial dust jacket, price intact (spine caps just pushed; jacket with a few neat repairs and reinforcements to verso, lower panel lightly soiled); 8 x 5 3/8 in.

Pulitzer Prize-winning author Eudora Welty's seventh book is alight with some of her finest prose, situating her mostly female cast of characters amid myths repainted in the warm hues of the Southern Gothic genre.
