Description
Abbott, Mary (1921-2019)
Watercolors, Two Examples.
Late-20th century.
Including: Oh beach quiet, and longitude; and an untitled piece; each watercolor on paper, initialed in pencil by Abbott on the lower right corner of image, both mounted and matted; each measuring 12 x 15 ¼ in. (2)
Abbott was born in New York City to a prominent family descended from John Quincy Adams. From a young age she pursued the study of art with George Grosz at the Art Students League and continued at Subjects of the Artist where she worked with Mark Rothko, David Hare, and Barnett Newman. Her East 10th Street avant-garde studio in Manhattan served as a gathering place for artists like Willem de Kooning and Jackson Pollock. Abbott was one of only three female members of "The Club" who met weekly to discuss art. She enjoyed spending time in nature and her work often captures her emotional response to the world around her, rearranging elements of the natural world into abstraction. "I like the process of painting. The intensity of living nature through myself-using the medium, paint, color, and line defining the poetry of living space; that is my aim, life and work."
