Pierre le Turcq, privateer captain in Vlissingen. Engraver: Pieter Willem van Megen (1750-1785). Artist: after Jacobus Perkois (Dutch, Middelburg 1756–1804 Middelburg). Title: Pierre le Turc, Capitein op het Vlissingsche Kaper-Schip De Zeeuw. Description: Pierre le Turcq (d. 1784), privateer captain in Vlissingen, with bearskin hat, ship's caller and binoculars. Production date: 1782. Size: 24,7x35 cms. Condition: good. Background: Pierre le Turcq was an important Zeeland captains such as Geleijn Ockerman, Willem Credo and Gerrit Hendrix remained relatively unknown. Yet they also made themselves heard regularly. It is remarkable that the Vlissingen privateer captains Nicolaas Jarry and Pierre le Turc – of French origin – are enjoying fame again. These captains fought during the Fourth English War (1780-1784). In this war, the Republic could not make a stand against mighty England.
