[CIVIL WAR - GETTYSBURG]. CDV of General Adelbert Ames, Congressional Medal of Honor recipient. New York: E. & H. T. Anthony, ca 1864.
CDV on cardstock mount (slight wear/loss to upper left corner of print; mount with minor wear and soiling). Verso bears Anthony's imprint, with negative credit to Brady, and affixed 2-cent revenue stamp with cancel. Ames appears from the waist up, seated and wearing a brigadier general uniform.
Adelbert Ames (1835-1933) was an American sailor, soldier, and politician. He served as a Union Army general during the American Civil War was awarded the Medal of Honor for actions at Bull Run on 21 July 1861. During the Battle of Gettysburg, Ames held a critical position during the Confederate assault on East Cemetery Hill, earning a brevet promotion to colonel for his actions. He would ultimately be brevetted a major general by the end of the war.
A carpetbagging Republican from Maine, Ames served as military governor, Senator and then civilian governor in Reconstruction-era Mississippi. In 1898 he served as a United States Army general once more during the Spanish-American War. Ames was the last Civil War general from either side of the conflict to die, dying at age 97 in 1933.
