THREE PATINATED AFRICAN MASKS, Mid-20th century. Three hand-carved decorated wooden masks as follows: (1) hand-carved mask from The Democratic Republic of Congo covered dried grass hair, height: 13 inches; (2) wooden hand carved Chokwe mask with finely carved scarifications including a cross on the forehead. The reddish patina was obtained through the application of red pigment called tukula. height: 7.5 inches; (3) hand-carved wooden Lega passport mask. Lega masks have a standard design and are made for special occasions. The Lega, also known as Warega, reside along the Lualaba River near Lake Tanganyika in the Democratic Republic of Congo, governing themselves through the communal "Bwami" association. height: 9 inches
